Let me introduce myself.. My name is Suchada, with the nickname of Doe+ (It's a thai name). I worked in an American software company. I am interested in astrology (just started).

This is my first time going into your astrology page. I am very new to the astrology. I am quite surprised about the special events. Almost all of them occur in the daytime. How can we see them. Beside since I am quite new to the astrology and constellations, I don't have those such equipment to study the stars. Will there be any activity to do with sky for those who don't have equipments?

First of all, Da Ra Sat (ดาราศาสตร์) is called ASTRONOMY, not ASTROLOGY. Astrology is Ho Ra Sat (โหราศาสตร์). Please don't be confused.

It's easy to learn the stars even without any equipment. You need only your good eye sight, clear moonless sky, and dark site far away from urban light.

To learn the constellations, I suggest you to buy a planisphere (skymap.) You can buy it at The Science Museum or the Spectrum Store near Bangkok Planetarium. Or order directly from TAS. It costs only 50-60 baht. Start with some bright and prominent constellations. Memorize their shapes. Then find links between their shapes and their names. Mythology can help you a lot to recognize the constellations (Sorry I don't know anything about mythology.) You need not to know all constellations. A dozen is just enough for this step. Then learn the celescial objects e.g. nebulae, galaxies, star clusters. The science about stars. and so on.

You may join TAS' star parties. We hold several star parties a year especially in winter and early summer. The next star party will be held in August. You can observe the meteor shower in this party. See more information at the star party page (https://thaiastro.nectec.or.th/party.html) You will meet many beginners there. Most of our attendees are beginners.

The time given in the Sky Event page are the peak of those events. But many events last for a long time, e.g., the conjunction, the Moon passes Venus by 5 degree on July 7, 10 A.M. You cannot see this event at the peak time, but you can see a similar spectacular phenomenon in the evening of the day. Don't worry.

The Beginner Page has been overlooked for a long time. The contents need to be updated and added. I must find some more free time to do it. Have you read this page?

Remember, don't rush to buy a telescope. Do start with your naked eyes. The second step is a pair of binoculars. Then buy a telescope when you feel you really love astronomy and you can afford it. I have learnt amateur astronomy and stargazing for more than 10 years. I have only a pair of binoculars and I don't feel like buying a telescope now. Binoculars observation may last for decades or even forever.

For the sky events, I understand that the event should not last longer than 12 hours. The event at 10 a.m. should not be observable at evening time. Am I right?

I am very interested in the star party. But surprisingly, if you say that most of the attendees are beginners. It sounds like those experienced don't feel like joining trip any more. Are the experienced ones bored?

For the party, do you have a pre-briefing before going out. Especially, if you are expecting them to be almost beginners. How many people have registered so far?

Your suggestion about naked eyes and binoculars sounds very good and convincing. I will take it. I bought a book about constellation observation. Will start reading and may need some of your help. Do you mind that?

Where do you get the number "12 hours?" For the conjunction, the pair comes closest at 10 A.M. After the peak. The pair slowly seperate wider and wider. 9 or 10 hours later, that evening, the moon will be about 5 degrees away from the peak position. In case of planet-planet conjunctions, the differences are negligible.

There are few experienced stargazers in Thailand. It might be true that the experienced stargazers are bored with joining TAS' star parties. An essential fact is that most stargazers love calm and privacy. So they choose to arrange their own trips instead of joining a crowded party after they can learn by themselve. Even me, sometimes I find an occasion to go out and sit under the dark clear sky alone.

Every star party has a brief preliminary training for beginners. At least you will be taught how to use the star map. The number of attendees usually fits in a bus, or 50-60 people.

Westerners have a set of constellations. Thai have a set of constellations as well. Sometimes they are not the same. Majority, Thai's would be a subset of western's. (?) Do Thai Astronomers refers to Thai or Western constellation?

Is there any book teaching you about finding one constellation/star by refering from another constellation. I guess that would help me for looking for stars.

We use the universal style. Thai names are very obscure. Thai constellation names are used to depict the shapes and patterns of stars. Where as universal term has more roles, e.g., to demarcate the area in the sky. On the other hand, universal constellation names have stricter definitions than Thai names.

You can find many English books teaching Star Hopping and Pointing. But for Thai books, I don't know much. There are two Thai books I know: "Ku Mue Doo Dao", writen by Ajarn Kanock Chankajorn, the vice president of TAS; the other I'm not sure for the name, may be "Luck Karn Do Dao Kan Ton", written by Ajarn Nibondh Saibedjra, the president of TAS. The latter is easier to find. Once I saw it in DK Mabunkrong.

Buy a star map first.

Yes, I got a star map. One funny thing, the constellations on the star map and the ones in the book sometimes have different shape, though not too much but quite significant. From my feeling, sometimes some from the star map distort from the sky, sometimes some from the book distort. Which one should i follow?

Which books do you refer to? I guess. Both are correct, or, precise enough. The distortion you noticed might be due to the difference of projections used by the book and the star map.

For the star map: Constellation shapes near the north star are more similar to constellations in the sky than the near-equator constellations.

For the projection used in books. I'm not sure because there are many projections being used. Usually, the near-equator and pole regions are more precise than other areas.

Beside the shapes of constellations, the styles of constellation lines may be different also. This is very common. Constellation line drawing is something arbitrary.

I am a Thai who just visited the Thai Astronomical Society Homepage. I think the site is still small and doesn't have many features to catch interest. Anyway, it is a great way to start. I think you can put some interesting links which contain pictures or multimedia, like live news on the net reporting the exploration on Mars, Discovery Net, NASA, and so on. It would be great if your web site will be the reference site for Thai people to find updated technological news and astronomical matters around the world. I hope to see a big improvement soon.

Yes, even I think the appearance of TAS pages is too dull. But the most important thing is the text content. So I pay attention to this first. Art, multimedia, animation, are next steps. However, TAS lacks hands to do this. I do 90 percent of the stuff in TAS pages. So I don't have other time to take care of the aestithics.

อยากให้แนะนำหนังสือที่ควรจะมีไว้คู่กาย หรือ จะแนะนำอะไรก็ได้ครับ สำหรับผู้ที่เพิ่งจะสนใจ (ความจริงสนใจมานานแล้วแต่เพิ่งจะมี web เป็นภาษาไทย ศัพท์เฉพาะในภาษาอังกฤษมีมากจนแปลเองแทบไม่ไหว ท้อไปก็หลายครา ผมจบทางภาษาจึงไม่มีพื้นทาง astrology เลย)

แล้วถ้าสนใจเรื่อง กล้อง CCD เป็นพิเศษล่ะครับ จากระดับเริ่มต้น (แต่อายุไม่ได้อยู่ช่วงต้นๆแล้ว - อายุ 27) จนถึงขั้นที่สมควรที่จะใช้กล้อง CCD นี่ไกลไหมครับ แล้วค่าใช้จ่ายเป็นอย่างไรครับ (ผมทำงานเกี่ยวกับคอมพ์จึงคิดว่า CCD นี่เหมาะกับผมกว่า)

คำถามมีแค่นี้ครับ

หนังสือดาราศาสตร์สำหรับผู้เริ่มต้นมีอยู่ไม่น้อย แต่มักหาซื้อยากและหมดเร็ว ส่วนใหญ่จะเป็นหนังสือสำหรับเด็ก ๆ เล่มละ 20-30 บาท หาตามศูนย์หนังสือจุฬาหรือดวงกมลสยามอาจจะมีบ้าง แต่ถ้าต้องการมีไว้คู่กายสำหรับผู้ใหญ่ ลองหาดู "คู่มือดูดาว" ของ อ.กนก จันทร์ขจร (หาซื้อยากเหมือนกัน) สมาคมดาราศาสตร์ไทยก็เคยมีขายแต่ไม่แน่ใจว่าหมดหรือยัง โทรเช็คดูนะครับ อีกเล่มหนึ่งของ อ.นิพนธ์ ทรายเพชร นายกสมาคม ผมจำชื่อหนังสือไม่ได้ คล้าย ๆ กับชื่อ "หลักการดูดาวขั้นต้น" หรือยังไงไม่แน่ใจ เล่มนี้น่าจะหาซื้อได้ง่ายกว่า เคยเห็นที่ดวงกมลมาบุญครอง นอกจากนี้ก็ยังเคยเห็นหนังสือแปลที่อยู่ในซีรีส์ของ Eye witness, ของ Go genious, ของ "รักลูก" พวกนี้ก็แปลได้ดีแต่แพงหน่อย พวกที่เป็นการ์ตูนของหมึกจีนและของซีเอ็ดก็ดีครับ ถึงแม้ว่าจะสำหรับเด็กก็ตาม แต่เนื้อหาไม่ใช่สำหรับเด็กอย่างเดียว ผมก็ชอบอ่าน

สิ่งที่ผมอยากจะแนะนำในขั้นแรก คือ สมัครเป็นสมาชิกสมาคมดาราศาสตร์ไทย สมาชิกผู้ใหญ่เพียงปีละ 150 บาท สมาชิกจะได้รับวารสารทางช้างเผือกปีละ 4 เล่ม มีข่าวสาร,บทความ,ปรากฏการณ์ต่าง ๆ เกี่ยวกับดาราศาสตร์มากมาย แล้วยังได้เข้าร่วมกิจกรรมดาราศาสตร์สัญจร (star party) ในราคาถูกด้วยครับ

เรื่องสำคัญ ดาราศาสตร์ ภาษาอังกฤษเรียก Astronomy ครับ ส่วน Astrology นั่นคือโหราศาสตร์ เขียนมาผิดหลายคนแล้วครับ สงสัยผมคงต้องเขียนเกี่ยวกับคำนี้ลงใน faqs page เสียแล้ว

เรื่อง CCD นี้ยังใหม่สำหรับเมืองไทย แน่นอนว่าไม่มีหนังสือที่เป็นภาษาไทย ผมรู้จักผู้ที่เล่น CCD เขาบอกว่าเล่นยากครับ ประการแรกเงินต้องถึง เพราะ CCD ราคาแพง (ตกประมาณพิกเซลละบาท) เวลาถ่ายก็โฟกัสยากเพราะมองไม่เห็นต้องใช้อุปกรณ์เพิ่ม เมื่อถ่ายเสร็จแล้วต้องผ่านกระบวนการประมวลผลภาพ (image processing) อีก ขอยืนยันว่า CCD ไม่ใช่ก้าวแรกของการเป็นนักดาราศาสตร์สมัครเล่น หรือการถ่ายภาพดาราศาสตร์หรอกครับ คุณควรดูดาวให้เป็นในระดับหนึ่งก่อน แล้วค่อยถ่ายภาพด้วยกล้องและฟิล์มธรรมดา เมื่อเชี่ยวแล้วค่อยเล่น CCD ครับ

จะเรียนเป็นนักดาราศาสตร์สมัครเล่นหรือนักดูดาวนั้นไม่จำเป็นต้องจบมาโดยตรงหรอกครับ ผมก็จบทางคอมพิวเตอร์ไม่เห็นเกี่ยวกัน กรรมการบริหารสมาคมส่วนใหญ่ก็ไม่ได้จบมาทางดาราศาสตร์เลย นักถ่ายรูปดาวเก่ง ๆ ที่ผมรู้จักบางคนจบ ป.7 ด้วยซ้ำ ขอให้มีความศรัทธาวิทยาศาสตร์ รักธรรมชาติ และมีความเพียรที่จะฝึกฝน เท่านั้นเป็นพอครับ

ตกลง CCD นี่เป็นอย่างที่คุณว่าจริงๆหรือครับ น่าเสียดายจัง ผมเองไม่ประสาเรื่องกล้องถ่ายรูปเอาเสียเลย รู้สึกว่ามันฝึกฝีมือยาก เพราะจะรู้ผลก็ตอนไปล้างรูปมาแล้ว เปลืองด้วยหากมันใช้ไม่ได้ ผมเห็นตาม web เกี่ยวกับ astronomy (คราวนี้ไม่พลาด) ก็มีเรื่องนี้มากพอสมควรนี่ครับ ดูๆแล้วเหมือนกับมันไม่ยากเลยในขั้นตอนของ image processing เพราะเห็นเขาเขียนโปรแกรมไว้ให้ใช้แล้ว ที่สังเกตดูนะครับ ถ้าเป็นแบบ homepage ส่วนบุคคลนี่ ส่วนใหญ่จะเล่น CCD กัน ผมถึงได้สนใจไงครับ เอาละ เมื่อผู้รู้แนะนำ ผมก็ต้องหาข้อมูลเพิ่มขึ้นให้ชัวร์ๆละครับ

อ้อ แล้วถ้าเป็นหนังสือแนะนำการดูดาวที่พิมพ์ในสหรัฐนี่ จะเอามาใช้ที่บ้านเราได้ไหมครับ ในแง่ของตำแหน่งหรือทิศทางของดาวที่เขาบอกน่ะครับ

I've just visited thaiastro.nectec.or.th after I knew it from TV. I found a small mistake on the Newsletter of Saturn Ring page. I would like to mention it for the sake of our young people. The word "Sun-ni-tarn" (to assume) is misspelled. Please correct it. I sincerely hope your home page will be very useful and worth reading for everyone.
